SINGLE REVIEW - Emilia Quinn -Magpie
Powerhouse Emilia releasing an mighty powerful song, "Magpie," kicking straight in with a real rocky start. The grit in the guitar before the full band pops in, sliding down to a mini-breakdown, and it's full on with the raw, edgy tone of Emilia vocals "Saluting magpies." The blues riff running around in the background with steady band backing, leading up to the first outstanding moment, "She is beauty, she is grace, she's a kick in the teeth and a slap in the face…" The faster delivery and layering on the vocals create power and presence, leading up to the full band entrance,
but with another layer of energy added. The vocals run on in the chorus section, "She's mine…" with one of Emilia's trademarks, a chorus with all different vocal runs from all ranges, low to high notes. The next verse has more outstanding runs, lyric “high” with high note and lyric “low” with low vocal runs. This exceptionally crafted track breaks down a tad with some amazing self-harmonies in the background, "Mine" combined with guitar runs, excellent delay leading up to "She's mine, yeah." A mighty vocal run leads in to an outstandingly crafted guitar solo with the band,
then it's just down to the basics of the drums with a little electric running around in the background. "She knows how to leave me wanting more," the run on this perfect bare-bones vocal run, "It's straight in the final full band section and that all-mighty Emilia trademark growl is out and in full flow, combined with some more background vocal runs, "oooo oooo, mine mine mine." The key part of this section is the power in the run, which is just incredible, short and hard-hitting, combined with fast-paced guitar sliding about and the band just when you think is starting to calm down, "Mine mine mine," back but even more powerful than the last section, leading to the band fade away and guitar slide out. "She's a little superstitious."
The power that Magpie delivers is outstanding, again it has everything that you know and love from an Emilia Quin track - superb runs with all kinds of ranges, high, low, and with little background instrumentation, self-harmonies, and background vocal parts, nothing short of exquisite. There is a debut album on the way, and based on the last few tracks released, it's going to be a real game-changer for her and her music. She's found her outstanding sound, so edgy ,that growl in voice and vocals completely different from every other artist and is smashing every release. Watch out, she's coming, people!
