Demi Marriner's 'Need to Know': A Vocal and Emotional Masterpiece
Following on from the stunning opening single Repeat Refrain from her latest project, The Things I Said, Demi releases her next single, Need to Know. It's another brilliant display of instrumentation and lyrical mastery. The way she combines the hard-hitting lyrics of this breakup story with a perfectly matched band that enhances the feeling of the track is remarkable. There are very few artists out there who can get this spot-on every time. After every key phrase, there’s precise guitar backing that deepens the meaning of the lyrics, “I’ll never know the truth from your disguise,” with an added double vocal run for effect. I can feel the tension in the song building: “Are you with me, or is there someone else? You see when you look at me?” What a line! I’m right in the story of this song at the moment.
“Your disguise eyes,” leading into a powerful moment in the song, that guitar build-up, and Demi pushing the emotion to the max, takes us to vocal places I don’t think I’ve heard from her on record before! It wouldn’t be Demi Marriner if she didn’t do what I’m calling her genius signature style—taking us somewhere vocally, then letting the band follow on, letting those powerful lyrics or vocal runs stay in your mind before it’s back down briefly, “from your disguise.” Another breathtaking vocal run—so long and powerful—and then out of nowhere, there’s a stunning high set of notes, topping the previous moment.
What a track! Just another remarkable signature release from Demi. If you took the vocals of the track and just played me the band backing without telling me who it is, I would instantly be able to tell you it’s Demi Marriner. That’s how much she has found her sound and owned it. Vocally, just the areas and tones she’s taking the listener through—easily one of the top vocalists in her genre.
I’ve heard the full record, having picked it up on her tour, and all I can say is that when someone says they’ve given you a very personal record, this takes it to another level. I was actually quite emotional on first listen. I’ve followed Demi for a number of years and know some of the story behind this project. It takes a lot to put something out on this scale, for sure.
