Preserving The Performance: [March Recap 2023 ] 003

March began with a trip to Brighton to live-stream Jenny Colquitt's gig at Komedia. Jenny's stage presence was outstanding, with or without her band. Simon, Jenny's partner, was on sound, so the audio quality was perfect. I visit Brighton frequently because it's only slightly farther away than central London.

On the 5th of March, Jess T returned to the airwaves, and we gave her the exclusive first play of her upcoming single "That Look in Your Eye." Jess is a vital figure in radio as she speaks her mind and provides in-depth information about the songs she plays.

Adele and Andy celebrated their two-year Twitch anniversary on March 6th. They were surprised with two lights, including a big LED neon RGB light of their name that was funded entirely by their community in secret over the last few months.

On March 7th, Write Like a Girl hosted an International Women's Day special at XXX, featuring powerhouse vocals from Simeon Hammond Dallas, who plays at all the major festivals, as well as Billie Flynn, Tina Boonstra, and Beth Keeping.

C2C Festival returned on March 10th, and I was fortunate to live about an hour away, so it wasn't too expensive. It included the public live debut performance of First Time Flyers, who clearly had a lot of fun on stage, and their harmonies were spot on. The venue was packed early in the morning,

and there were great acts throughout the weekend, including Brain Collins, who supported Kezia on her tour,

and Jess and the Bandits.

I also caught Jade Halliwell on the outside stage, playing to another packed-out crowd.

Remember Monday was one of the last acts on the outside stages, and their harmonies were perfect. There were slight sound tech issues, but it was not their fault. Acts on the main stages, such as Thomas Rett and Mitchell Tenpenny, were excellent, and Lyndsay Ell's guitar skills were spot on.

It was a whole week until my next gig on the 19th, and the wonderful Zoe Wren played her folk storytelling sounds at the new venue, Brasserie Zedel Underground, just off Tottenham Court Road. "Vapour" is one of my favourite songs of hers.

On the 23rd, there was a great local gig at the Bulls Head featuring Robert Vincent, supported by Kenny Foster. Kenny's stories and songs were a real treat to hear for a whole hour, and the jokes were hilarious.

Robert Vincent played an unplanned set of mostly fan-requested songs, with a few new tracks from his upcoming record. He is one of my favorite male artists, and the Liverpool accent comes across in his music combined with harmonica. Harmonica is not used enough in records these days. This was my last gig of the month.

Full set from Robert Vincent Will be out-soon

On the 24th, Adele and Andy released their latest single, "That Look in Your Eye," which was featured as BBC Radio Shropshire's record of the week on BBC Introducing last week. On the day of the release, we were contacted by BBC about coming in on the following Monday to do a live session on BBC Shropshire.

I went up there the day before to have a re-lighting session with the gifts they had received during their 2-year celebration at the beginning of the month.

Before

After

There was a significant difference in the two photos, and their lights were now fully controlled by Twitch viewers, and their LED neon sign looked fantastic. I tried to rewire it and connect it to Twitch, but it was a nightmare. On Monday, we did the live session at BBC Shropshire, and the staff was lovely. They played two live tracks, "No More Goodbyes" watch below and "Spread your wings and fly
